Graduate and trainee engineering jobs: Latest vacancies
Qualifying as an engineer
Civil engineers continue to learn throughout their careers and a key part to this progression are professional qualifications, the standards of which are set out in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence or UK-SPEC. The three levels are: chartered engineer, incorporated engineer and engineering technician.
There are several institutions that can award status and these are licensed by the Engineering Council UK. Most engineers apply through the Institution of Civil Engineers, which serves a broad civil engineering body – but there are alternatives, which include the Institution of Highways and Transportation for transport engineers.
Employers will specify which 'level' of engineer they require in job advertisements, and commonly encourage candidates to progress their engineering status through further education and training.
